Fashion Show Fun!

The view from the runway.
What fun we had today! Last weekend while at the mall there was a casting call for a "Back To School" fashion show. The girls walked the runway and smiled at the judges for their audition and was picked to model for Hibbets Sportswear. Today was the show and the girls had a great time.

I would say they were a bit nervous at first but Kayla says she wasn't. They were so stinkin cute! They walked the walk and smiled the whole way down the runway. In the end it was a great experience for the both of them.

SCHOOL TIME?? Already?

It is hard to believe that school is already starting for us. We don't take the "normal" 3 months off in the summer. I like to keep them up on reading and their math facts so we do flash cards and review worksheets and lots of reading throughout the summer. To get them to want to participate in their math and reading I make them a progress chart with some well earned incentives. My kids love charts and like to see their progress and what their goal is. Both my kids love to earn money so that is what I do.
Yes, it sounds funny to bribe my kids to do their school work with money incentives .... but whatever it takes to create that motivation is something I will highly consider. Plus, that is really how the "real" world works anyway. If you want a raise at work then you work a little harder to earn that.
I love it when people ask my kids what school they go to and they proudly answer, "We homeschool!" Then at times they ask what grade they are in and Kayla now says 5th grade. It is funny how she skipped fourth grade??
I told her that she is in fourth grade but she knows that she just took her placement test and placed in the third book of fifth grade for her math so technically she is in fifth grade. Right?
Last year, I went with pretty much Abeka, but this year I am switching it up. We are switching to A.C.E. as I find their system is right up my alley. I love how they have 12 small consumable color booklets for each subject. This makes school seem not so over whelming with that huge text book in front of your face. The kids will also have a sense of accomplishment more frequently throughout the year as they work through and complete these smaller booklets.

Above is Kayla's A.C.E. booklets along side Abeka cursive, Steck Vaughn vocab and extra reading with Harcourt. We will be using "A Child's History of the World" this year for her history.

Here is Shae's set of her first booklets with A.C.E. and her Steck Vaughn Maps, Globes and Graphs. Shae will be learning cursive this year with Abeka and also be taking animal science. For her grade I had a choice for regular science or animal science and I choose animal science since she in very interested in animals.
After they complete an A.C.E . PACE booklet they have a test on that booklet. So, each subject will have 12 tests throughout the year. That will be 48 tests a year for Math, English, Word Building and Science.

This is my record keeping system. The messy thing on the far right is a curvy chart that has a reading assignment in each box. They each get one of these and will read several times aloud to me during the week and they color in a box. Every 15th box they earn a dollar. So, they could potentially earn some good cash on this reading program.

The small sheet is their daily goal sheet. It lists each subject and what they are to get done on that day. When the days work is completed I get this sheet along with their booklets and grade everything. If anything needs to be corrected they will get the sheet and booklets back for corrections.

**NOTE: I go over the newly assigned work and instructions as needed. This curriculum is set up as pretty much a self paced self instructional program.
Kayla catches on pretty fast and can mostly work independently.
I sit right between them as we do our schooling.
So, how long is our day of school work you ask? Well, let me put it this way. At their age they are done completely with book work within 2 hours. Then we read aloud and a couple of times a week we will be working on cooking, a sewing project or creating a history lap book. We have our afternoons completely free just about every day to do the things we love ( i.e. spend time together working on a puzzle, gardening, swinging, building a playhouse, volunteering at the zoo, play dates with friends, tennis and dance class and art class). Wow! What fun!
We also school 5 days a week for the months of August, September and October. Then 3 days a week in November and December ... due to them performing in a show and the holidays and both their birthdays. Come Jan., Feb., March and April we go to 4 days a week and will be done by the first of May.

Yes, this is real!

True, I took this photo while at the zoo. And below is the same photo cropped. AMAZING huh!!

JUST BEAUTIFUL!

FIRST HARVEST FOR THE ZOO

This has been a tough year for us and the zoo garden volunteer project. I got a call to take over the garden that helps to feed the animals and so I of course I said "yes." Well, first off I am not a "green thumb" person at all but I gave it a go. The garden had many challenges this season. It first needed to be put in order due to the last monsoon that washed away our good soil. Thanks to Dawn and her boys for heading up that project! Then it was the watering system that died on us and me and a couple of friends had to take turns going to the zoo EVERYDAY twice a day to water. Then we got a fabulous donation from Watter's Nursery of every kind of veggie you could think of (eggplant, peas, green beans, black beans, ambrosia melon, cantaloupe, squash, zucchini, carrots and more). The problem came when the rabbits and squirrels found our garden and went thru the fence or dug under the fence and had a feast. Then the peacocks that roam freely around the zoo would hop over the fence and have a snack as well.
Darn them for knowing what a good thing to eat was!

We now only have zucchini and squash and one melon plant left and they are growing great! We went this morning to weed the garden and had our first harvest. The girls were so excited after being so down on everything being eaten. If anything ..... this one zucchini was worth it to Shae! It was a honker!
They are pictured here bringing their harvest to the zoo kitchen. Boy were they proud!
So, the plan for next season is to ONLY grow squash, zucchini and cucumbers.
Thanks to my wonderful friends who helped me this season!

Tis the season to enjoy the outdoors!

Time to get out the soccer goals says Shae. And that we did! The girls and Tom and I have been playing soccer in the evenings and enjoying this lovely weather.

And what a view we have! I just love looking at the wonders of the world and think how ever long this lasts ...I love it!

Soaking up the summer sun is lots of fun!

We had a wonderful afternoon at the clubhouse last Sunday. Tom and I hung out all afternoon with the girls. We had a blast! The girls met a couple of new friends and later a pack of friends.
I love going to the clubhouse as it feels like we are at a resort visiting from out of town. This day there was a BBQ and we sipped on our Arizona Tea.

School starts for us next week and I will be getting our schedule in order. Even though the summer is still here and school starts doesn't mean that we will stop hanging out at the clubhouse. Another joy of homeschooling! The time we have for "fun" stuff is endless!

The joy rain brings is amazing!

The rain! It finally rained! The excitement that filled the kids with joy was amazing. They couldn't resist but to go out in it. It was first a little curiosity then the follow me around the sidewalk out back with many giggles.

This photo says it all!

I took this shot of my nephew while he focused on his bubble blowing. My sister in law and I cracked up as he didn't mind the taste of a little bubble juice.

Zoo Garden

This year I am the Heritage Zoo garden volunteer person. :)
A few friends of mine got together and prepared the soil for our growing season. The kids helped and it was a blast. I am making this project a homeschool project for the kids.
Working on planting seeds and plants.
The kids were so into this ...... it was great to see and for them to experience.

They know they are growing food for the animals in the zoo.

I took this photo while we were leaving the zoo. This peacock allowed the kids to get very close and touch him. He was showing off his beautiful colors.

A game of tennis anyone?

Focused: To concentrate
Tennis at the racquetball club has been great! We are so lucky as homeschoolers to be able to get a great rate and be able to have our very own private tennis class during the early hours of the day.

Style: 1. A way or manner of performing. 2. An elegant mode of life.
Once again, here is Kayla and when she does something it is always with style and grace and to perfection.

Aren't we cute and lucky!

GOLF CAMP

This is something that I wish I could of done while a kid. But of course really would of never thought of doing such a thing. This was the girls second year in golf camp and they loved it.

The picture below cracks me up! It pretty much sums up Kayla all together. Here she is on the golf course watching Shae all dressed up in her snazzy dress, hat and big flip flops. She had sprained her wrist pretty bad before camp started so she sat out on the first day and watched.

Feeling a little better during the week she thought she would give it a try. That was probably not the best "mommy" decision (to allow her to play with a hurt wrist). But, oh well!
Both girls were excellent at the chipping station. Shae even got 3 hole in ones from this point.

This is one of my favorite shots of Shae walking to her next station with her new clubs on her back. As big as that bag was she was determined to carry the bag all week for 2 1/2 hours of learning stations.

Just a fun day!

We had a fun family day in Jerome. We visited the old King Mine and had a blast. What a nice day it was just walking around the shops and having lunch and our favorite stop .... the fudge shop.

Here is Pedro Gonzales. He was so friendly and ate from our hands. He even gave me a kiss on the check for a carrot.
The school house was old, dusty and not inviting. The girls said that they would homeschool for sure if that was their school. tee, hee, hee!

This sign is cute and so true!

I love this shot of the girls!

Happy Fourth of July!!!

5th annual!

Our annual July 4th party was a great time this year!

It seems to keep growing which is a nice thing about having such great friends!

Welcome to the Jungle

The girls just finished their summer camp at PFAA. They had a blast! Kayla was a hippo pictured above and Shae a storyteller.

This was Shae's second play and she loves it as much as Kayla does. We were so proud of both of them!

I did the animal face painting for the show. I got to practice a couple of the animals on the girls faces.

SHOW TIME!!!

What fun Kayla had doing this show at PFAA!
She had 10 performances and all shows were practically sold out!
Above she is on top of the stack as "Interjanet Planet."

Kayla is in the front with the pink scarf in Circulation.
